Like many religious leaders, I was caught in the delusion of my doctrine, a maze of religious confusion. This has proven to be conditional and divisive; but I have spiritually evolved over the years to omit or “dot-dot-dot” all that conditional religious doctrine to a single point, Unconditional Love. Herein, we find the spiritual search to be the ultimate journey of Self Discovery. We Are Love. It is said that a man with an experience is never at the mercy of a man with an argument. This “experience” is MY Quiet REVolution that has led me to my life’s motto:
Love… just Love
I remember the magic my siblings and I felt as kids as we sat down to watch our favorite annual movie, The Wizard of Oz. It was on television just once a year, and it was the biggest event in our household. Our eyes widened and our hearts leapt as Dorothy began singing, “Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly. There’s a land that I heard of once in a lullaby…” We knew that we were in for a great adventure that night.
As the story goes, a yellow-brick road would lead home-sick Dorothy to the fantastical land of OZ to fulfill her quest to find a wizard to help her return home. Clicking the heels of her red ruby slippers, she chants, “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.” As she awakens from her dream-state, she discovers that she never really left home.
She was chasing a dream for something she had had all along; and the LOVE that surrounded her at home was always with her.
It was 1975 and I had just turned eight. I got a gift of eight silver dollars for my birthday: one for each year. It was finally time for the big annual TV event. Our family arranged the pillows on the living room floor, as the smell of popcorn filled the air. From the corner of my eye, I noticed my little 4 ft 5 inch Italian grandmother, fondly known to us as Mom-Mom, getting ready to visit her God down at the Catholic church. I curiously wondered, “God? Was he a wizard like the one in OZ?” I don’t know what came over me at that moment, but I had an epiphany.
I thought to myself, if Dorothy can find a wizard, then maybe I can find a wizard too. It was a bold move, but I did it. To the bewilderment of my mother and siblings, I stood up and proudly declared, “I’m going to church with Mom-Mom.” My siblings looked at me like I had three heads. After all, there’s only one word for missing The Wizard of Oz for any reason; INSANITY. Nevertheless, over the rainbow and off I went; off to find the wizard, the wonderful wizard of… well, this began MY spiritual search.
